Akhtar started his directorial career by employed as an apprentice in cinematography and direction for Yash Chopra’s Lamhe in 1991. Subsequently, he transferred to an ad production house, Script Store. He additionally assisted Pankaj Parashar as a director in 1997 movie, Himalay Putra before establishing himself into direction and writing. In 2001, he made his directorial debut with all the acclaimed film Dil Chahta Hai. The movie was produced by Excel Entertainment Pvt. It had been screened at the International Film Festival of India, the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival. Akhtar appeared in the film Lakshyain 2004. Subsequently, he collaborated with his sister, Zoya in writing the English lyrics of Gurinder Chadha’s Hollywood movie, Bride and Prejudice, in 2004. The movie starred actor Shah Rukh Khan, and was a remake of a 1978 movie starring Amitabh Bachchan. In 2007, he made the film Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, that has been directed by Reema Kagti.
