From 2003 through 2005 season, Jim played for the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox from 2006 through 2009. In August 2009, Thome was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Justin Fuller and some cash concerns. When the season finished, Thome signed with the Minnesota Twins where he also played for one season.
