He became a reporter, first with his home town paper the South Wales Echo and afterwards together with the London Evening News. While working in London, he composed his first novel. His first best seller was his eleventh novel, Eye of the Needle, which came in 1977. A sequence of blockbusters followed. In all he’s sold 130m copies worldwide.
